The “delicate sense of instrumental colouring and spontaneous, irrepressible flow of melody” lay at the heart of Dvorak’s reverence for Mozart. These traits shine through in this program featuring works of both masters, Dvorak’s second piano quintet and Mozart’s second “Prussian” string quartet. Much-loved for its vibrant energy and folk-inspired exuberance, Dvorak’s quintet grows out from its opening lyrical cello theme.

The cello features prominently throughout the Mozart quartet, famously commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm II who was himself an amateur cellist. Between these works, the WA premiere of Lachlan Skipworth’s Piano Quartet combines an intricate web of dark hued string chords with passionate melodic outbursts, building and twisting through a virtuosic tour-de-force.
